About Me

David Judd is a Melbourne-based photographer whose work is rooted in a cinematic understanding of light, space, and presence. He first turned to photography as a way to better understand cinematography, inspired by the naturalistic yet sculpted lighting of Conrad Hall and Owen Roizman. What began as study quickly became a practice in its own right.

Influenced by the humanist tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, David’s work balances attentiveness and playfulness. His photographs move between constructed portraiture and staged narrative settings, while remaining grounded in real emotional moments. He is drawn to the tension between vulnerability and joy — the push and pull of everyday life.

Working exclusively with analogue film, David embraces the medium’s texture, limitations, and unpredictability. He avoids heavy digital manipulation, preferring images that retain their original character and tonal depth. For him, imperfection is not a flaw but a reflection of lived experience.

Through portrait and narrative work, David seeks to create images that feel immediate, cinematic, and emotionally resonant — photographs that honor the complexity of people as they are.

He is available for portrait, editorial, and cultural commissions.
